Sleepytime Green Juice

on

I often struggle with falling asleep. It can take me anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours to fall asleep. And that’s time in bed, lights off, eyes closed. A few months ago I really struggled with insomnia. I would go to bed at 10pm and still be awake at 4 or 5am! It really started to wreck my body. When I started juicing, one of the first things I looked up was juicing for insomnia and it turns out there are juice recipes you can make that are specifically for sleep aide. This recipe is one of my favorite (and found to be most effective) combinations. The oil in celery naturally calms your nervous system. It also contains magnesium which helps your body relax. Dark leafy greens, such as kale, contain calcium which helps your body use tryptophan to produce sleep-inducing melatonin. Green apple helps alleviate the bitter taste from the kale and naturally detoxes your body. Some people find that apple juice makes them more energized, so find the amount that works for you, or sub in for kiwi to help with the taste. Ginger contains Magnolol, which acts as a mild sedative. Lemon, high in vitamin C and inositol, which protects the immune system and helps reduce anxiety.

Servings: 1

  • 6 stalks celery
  • 8-10 leaves of kale (or any dark leafy green)
  • 1 green apple
  • 2 inches ginger
  • 1 lemon
  • Optional add-ins: cucumber, kiwi, cherry, banana (do not put banana through your juicer, blend with juice after)

Run items through you juicer, starting with greens and celery and finish with the apple, which will help push everything through.

If you don’t have a juicer, you can put everything in a blender and strain the juice out using a cheese cloth or nutmilk bag.
